AFAR Florida Research Grants

The AFAR Florida Board of Directors is committed to advancing the science of biomedical research on aging in Florida through the AFAR Florida Research Grant Program. A priority of AFAR Florida is to increase the number of Florida-based scientists who successfully compete at the national level for AFAR Research Grants.

AFAR Florida Research Grants provide $100,000 to early-career investigators with flexible support at a critical juncture in their career development when research funding is most difficult to obtain—during the transition from postdoctoral fellowship training to junior faculty appointments.

AFAR has a nationally respected and scientifically rigorous grant review process that is overseen by a National Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of more than 350 of the nation’s leading medical and biological research scientists in aging and aging-related fields.  Because of the committee members’ breadth of knowledge and research expertise, grant applications covering the entire spectrum of biomedical research on aging can be reviewed, awarded, and evaluated.

The AFAR Research Grant Program is highly effective in identifying promising new scientists who go on to distinguish themselves as leaders in the field, chairing departments and running labs at major academic institutions.

Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program

The 2011 MSTAR Program provides medical students, early in their training, with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences that they might not otherwise have during medical school. This positive introduction has led many physicians-in-training to pursue academic careers in aging, ranging from basic science to clinical research to health services research. They have joined the growing cadre of physicians and scientists whose specialized knowledge and skills are in great demand as our population ages.
